Valentines Day, is the day when people in love show their significant other the love in their heart by sending candy, cards or flowers, a tradition that has been going on for centuries. The day is named for a number of Christian Martyrs named Valentine, and was first established by Pope Gelasius I in the year 500 AD. Soon after, the tradition of giving sweet confections began. In those days, many cards were given and hand written. The person pouring out his or her heart in the form of a card or letter, was considered a Valentine. The beauty of the flower became a part of the day a little later, to show your Sweetheart how special she was to you.
Saint Valentines Day shortened to Valentines Day, has become a favorite holiday to many. A day to show our love for the person we plan to spend our life with or at best much of our time. Giving flowers and sweets has become a tradition not only for men but women as well. Over time the traditions have changed in this degree only.
Women love to send flowers to their loved one as well. Many times we also remember other loved ones, such as a child or grandparent. However the tradition is the same, giving your specific other special gifts and a card to show what’s in your heart.
In today’s world there are many symbols of Valentine’s Day. The heart being one of those we see when we think of our loved one. After all, where does the love come from? We also see cupid with his little arrow as a symbol of this special day. More recently the dove has appeared as a symbol of love and purity.
Sending a card is still a favorite and there are many to choose from. What was once hand written has become a sea of verses and sweet words found in cards of all size and shape. There are even talking cards in this modern world. A big change from long ago.
Although the old tradition is the same, there are many different types of gifts given now. Some like the promise of spending more time together, while others like a vast array of gifts: Money being one of those gifts! Many people become engaged on this day, for those in love. Others become man and wife. Going out for a special meal together has also become a favorite. Giving a set of love birds to your special someone is also a favorite for many, symbolizing making love last and staying together no matter the trials life brings.
Some of the Valentine’s Day colors are dear to the heart as well. The fire red we see reminds us of the passion love holds, especially for lovers who plan to spend a lifetime together. The pinks that tell of the warmth in our hearts for the person we are loving. The puffy white which is a symbol of the purity of the love. The purple tells of the royalty this love brings. Many gifts are given with these colors in mind, as hearts, flowers and sweets are given to those we love.
