Graduations happen every year.  So many of us know people who are graduating from one school to another and coming up with good gifts that they can actually use is always hard.  But instead of buying them a teddy bear with their school’s shirt on it, a graduation coffee mug, a photo frame with their grad year on it, pick out something that they will actually need or use in their new life journey.  Whether it’s moving from Jr. High to High School, High School to College or College to Life, you can always find a gift that that special kid can use.  Money is usually a staple, but kids just end up blowing it away or spending it on something they think they need, but really don’t.  So, think about the kid your buying for and what school journey they’re moving onto to decide what will work for them.  Here are some practical gift ideas for each school.

To High School

  • School Supplies
  • Sporting equipment for whatever sport they plan on playing
  • New clothes or a gift card to their favorite store. They will want to look cool:)
  • A video game system.  I now your thinking “what?!”, but today’s games are much more advanced in that they force you to develop problem solving skills.  Not just thumb coordination.
  • If you have a business that allows you to hire kids under 18, give the kid a job!  Nothing says “I trust you with responsibility” than offering them a position – they need to learn life skills.  Plus, you’ll be paying them for the work!

To College

  • Nice pen set
  • Luggage or weekender bag
  • Laptop or desk computer and a printer
  • Desk Lamp
  • Camera – digital or video.  They’ll want to remember these times.
  • A special Calculator (depending on their major)
  • Linens (twin sheets, blankets, towels, pillows)
  • Toiletries
  • School Supplies
  • A gift card to the college book store where they will be purchasing their books
  • Collapsible baskets for storage such a laundry hamper
  • Laundry detergent, fabric softener, change for laundry

To Life

  • Laptop or Computer
  • Watch
  • Whatever they may need for the job they’re planning to get
  • If they are moving into a new home or apartment, give them the furniture or housewares they need.
  • Money.  They will need to survive until they get the job of their dreams.
