The holidays are quickly approaching and we believe now is a great time to start thinking about decorations. The day after Thanksgiving is not only black friday, but also when most of us buy our Christmas trees. Since we want you all to be prepared for what to put on the tree this year, we’ve hooked up with SeasonalConcepts to bring you: 10 great tips for decorating your tree:

1. Theme

Working within a theme is helpful when planning for decorating. A theme can be anything you can think of. You can theme by color, florals, Santas, garden, butterflies, woodland theme, traditional, snowman… anything can be a theme. Stick within your subject and you will be fine. Carrying through the theme onto the tree skirt helps tie it all together.

2.

Scale

Most people forget about scale when decorating a tree. Using oversized items such as balls, larger florals or even items from around your home (instruments, Santa collectables, sleighs or other items that you can secure to the tree with floral wire). Adding large pieces creates drama and interest. Think large!

3. Color

Using the colors of the room where the tree is displayed helps create harmony and unifies the tree to its setting. This can be achieved through the use of ribbon, florals, or a few larger focal points that match the furnishings of the room it is set in. Using bold colors such as metallics or even creating a tree in a monochromatic theme (such as shades of gold or using 1 color) can be dramatic and shows off texture and shape. How about multi-color trim on a white tree or bringing in drama with a colored tree and all silver or metallic trim. Ornaments in one color and style get a designer look by varying the sizes of the ornaments (small, medium, and large) and by choosing them in a unique matte luster finish combined with a standard shiny gloss finish.

4. Create a Line

Create a strong decorating line for your tree. Go for an ‘S’ line or a straight vertical line to accentuate your collection. You can create a line by the use of ribbon or as simply as the placement of items. An ‘S’ line is exactly what is says – picture a large S in the front of your tree and that is the line you use to place your decor.

5. Ribbon

Ribbon always makes a beautiful statement in your christmas tree. Adding ribbon for side bows, tree topper bows, ribbon as garland or even small bows for the special ornaments creates instant color. The trick is using 2-4 coordinating colors and patterns. Select ribbons that show up easily against the green of the tree. Be sure to think in terms of texture and contrast. Showing contrasting colors, materials, open weave and sheers against velvets and metallics are always beautiful. When using ribbon as garland, use the tips of the branches to secure the ribbon to the tree or use floral wire and place deep into the tree as well as on the outer branches.

6. Sparkle and Shine

Create sparkle and shine by adding novelty lights to your christmas tree. Novelty lights are a quick and easy way to add extra personality to your existing décor. Novelty lights come in a variety of sizes, styles and colors to choose from such as C-9, Bubble lights, LED lights etc…. You can still create additional sparkle and shine by placing a mirror behind your tree. This will make the tree appear larger and reflect the lights for double the twinkle. If you use this approach, be sure to decorate the backside of the tree. More opportunity to show off your collection.

7. Pattern

Repeating a color, shape, focal point or size of an item throughout the tree creates a pattern. Having a pattern helps the eye rest and creates a unified look.

8. Layers

When decorating your chritsmas tree, think in terms of layers. Start with any additional lights or novelty lights, add your ribbon or decorative garland, large focal points, florals and top off with ornaments.

9. Depth

Be sure to hang your larger ornaments deep inside the tree with the smaller or crystal ornaments on the outer branches, this will create depth and keep your tree from looking flat. Keep in mind the depth rule for florals, lights and all items. Varying the size of the decorations and mixing up textures with shiny and matte finishes helps to create depth to you christmas tree.

10. Nature

Natural elements add an earthy quality to holiday decorating and are an inexpensive addition to a tree. Try wiring on pinecones, leaf sprays (dried or preserved), leafy garlands, or branches of berries for a wonder- fully rustic and elegant look. take a nature hike and see what you can discover. Add a touch of glitter or irridescent spray and it is now Christmas.
